The Complete Book Chords Scales and Arpeggios for the Guitarist Al Politano 0073999145113 Books

This book is a catalog of scales, chords, and arpeggios, presented in diagrams, without any real context or instruction. Beginners would do far better to get something like Chords and Progressions for Jazz and Popular Guitar for a good introduction to chords and their use in jazz, and Mimi Fox's Mel Bay Guitar Arpeggio Studies on Jazz Standards, or even that great classic, the Mickey Baker's Complete Course in Jazz Guitar: Book 1 (Ashley Publications) for a fine introduction to chords and arpeggios. Experienced players might find this a good reference, but I suspect they'd probably prefer to write out their own patterns.

The Complete Book Chords Scales and Arpeggios for the Guitarist Al Politano 0073999145113 Books Reviews

Doesn't show a complete selection of open chords. No sharp or flats, just white key ones.
I was hoping this would be a do it all reference book. Very disappointed.
This was one of the first books that I had bought when I first started playing guitar. I had figured that learning and being able to I.D. chords/scales/arps would be a lot of work, but Al Politano's book wouldnt be something that I recomend to beginers, if at all; as it is filled with endless and very impractical patterns that would take advanced players awhile to get down to be able to use in a playing situation. However, the book has some things to offer, such as chord/scale construction and some very easy and pratical shapes that I actually use. I cant tell you that you should or shouldnt buy this book because I dont know what you want and it does have some good parts, but the best advice that I can give you is that if you buy the book only study a couple of shapes from each section, not all of them.
I've studied folk, rock, and jazz guitar. I picked up a copy of this book in a local music store. Should have checked first as it is cheaper here. Onto the review...

The book, like many types of these books, should be seen as a reference book. The forward by the author encourages this thought. It's not something I would say you need to work through from front to back. What intriuged me to pick up this book were the different variations of the arpeggio patterns. As I've been practicing a few at a time, I've found it encourages creative exploration of ideas. This is the purpose of this book. It's a pallet of pure colors. As you practice some of the patterns, the relation to neighboring arpeggio patterns and scales begin to surface.

It's not really for a beginner in my opinion. As I'm finding it's mainly my jazz background enabling me to really get the most of this material. A good understanding of basic music theory is something you should have for this book to be useful. All in all it's a solid reference book and I reccommend it only for intermediate to advanced guitarist.
the book was shipped on time

however, the book looks like it sat in water, and smelled of mildew, the entire book is junked, the pages are brittle due to the water damaged

I emailed these fools, so far no response

do not buy anything from these fraking idiots

Love this book. Totally helped me get going.
Very pleased with this book. Book is for the experienced guitar player. If you already have a base knowledge of notes and chords and are looking for a book to show you all the different chords and arrpegios then this book is for you. Good book for reference to chords and arrpegios.
For the serious middling guitarist. Trippy 70s-esque acid rock decorations on pages that contain mostly handwritten jazz chord, arpeggio, and scale diagrams in the most practical, essential positions--it's cool but tripped out since most of the material is relevant to streetfighter jazzmenco, which is the style guitaristas play, you know, latin ghetto funk without the big booty and with more shredding and exotic scales--all with refined jazz sensibility though, even paying homage to bebop masters without seeming yuppie. If you want to play the right scale or arpeggio over the right chord, Politano provides his practical, organized take on it. No BS theory explanations here. No 1,000,000 chord positions. Just the essentials--enough for a lifetime for the jazz, classical, rock, jam, funk, hip-hop, etc players world over. The best guitar book.
