Another short story, but as much as I hate short stories, I did enjoy this one as it provides insight into the Emperors Edge Series which I have very much enjoyed and I would think you will also if your reading this (long for me) review.

Shadows Over Innocence an Emperor Edge short story The Emperor Edge eBook Lindsay Buroker Reviews
A quick read prequel for Emperor's Edge that provides very little background on Sicarius. Not really necessary in order to enjoy the rest of the series.
Every so often I search for Lindsay Buroker's books. She has such skill in capturing the reader and transporting them into another world. Even in this short story which is a prequel of Emperor's Edge, a series of books I did not originally anticipate on buying but was so sucked into that world. I could not stop myself.
I can no longer recall if her stories were recommended to me or if I happened upon them. Regardless, I was drawn in from the first read. I love the imagery, character development, plot complexity as well as the dialogue and occasional sarcasm.I really like the changing point of view among the books in the Emperor's Edge series. I've recommended and/or lent them to friends and family and each later relates the same thing(s) I've experienced, "Yeah, so I've finished that book and now I'm _____ (reading the next in the series, reading a novella, looking for more books by her, et cetera.)" Can't wait for more and I don't know what I'm going to do when she completes the series!
Short story, can't remember if I finished dinner or the book before...
Sweet aparte from the series The Emperor's Edge, putting the light on some of Sicarius' past- one of our beloved main characters in the series. Brushing the psychological profiling of a man raised from birth to become a killing machine to the Crown, at the orders of the Army.
Sicarius proves you can be a cold blooded murderer in the name of duty, but deep down know showing violence to a 5 years old boy is wrong.
This novella gives the background of the training and conflicted personality of the assassin who stars in the Emperor's Edge series. Learn to commiserate with the great Sicarius as he hardens his heart and soul to become the perfect weapon in the fight to protect the ones who have won his respect and the right to his protection, and seeks to find his own loyalties and purpose.
Lindsay Buroker has authored some 33 books by my count and an additional 6 books under the pen name Ruby Lionsdrake. Of the books I have read she has had a few slow ones and but one dud that I did not finish. The Emperor's Edge Series consisting of 13 books (2 or 3 are short stories, otherwise they are full novels) is the best of the bunch. It follows an emperor, a government assassin and a ex-policewoman reformer leading a gang of outcasts dedicated to saving the empire and the emperor from the government bad guys. These books follow a nicely woven plot-line with variations all leading to a good end. Buroker's characterization and description is great, you can sometimes smell the people and places described.
This series along with her other books are light, easy to follow, and each one offers an excellent read.
I really liked these books (i've now read the entire emperor's edge series & am continuing w/ others that the author has written that encompass the same universe). This is a prequel to events in the emperor's edge series. I feel that the characters are well-drawn & interesting, not one-dimensional at all. The plot (or plots) are believable & mesh well w/ one another. There are, of course, odd creatures specific to Buroker's universe, but she doesn't add more & more outlandish ones in an attempt to make her books more exciting, a practice which i've seen far too often in works of this type. On the technical side, I have found far fewer grammatical or proofreading errors than in other books i've read recently. i read them on my Nook or iphone, & i suspect most errors are a result of computerizing them, which is unfortunate.
“Shadow’s Over Innocence” is a short story set about a dozen years before The Emperor’s Edge. In it, Lindsay Buroker takes a closer look at the mysterious and deadly assassin Sicarius, who plays a central role in the ongoing series, also named The Emperor’s Edge.
As the tale begins, Sicarius has just completed a successful assassination for his liege lord. Upon his arrival at the palace, he interacts with Emperor Raumesys Savarsin, Commander of the Armies Hollowcrest, and five-year-old Prince Sespian; something that allows this silent assassin to divulge parts of his murky past, explore who he might truly be, and internally express his true feelings about those he serves – years before his chronicled exploits.
As a less-than-enamored reader of The Emperor’s Edge (The book was far too “campy” for me.), I choose not to continue along with the series, but this short story was one I felt compelled to give a try for one simple reason Sicarius! While Amaranthe Lokdon was definitely the protagonist of the series, this near silent, mysterious killer was, by far, my favorite character.
Yeah, I know, I tend to say that assassins are a bit overused in fantasy, and I still stand by that opinion, but Buroker’s take on this standard character was very compelling. This was mainly due to how Sicarius was portrayed saying very little, blending in with the crowd, keeping to himself, not trusting people, and being skilled at numerous tasks. Traits which allowed this royal assassin to do his job with high efficiency and little fuss in The Emperor’s Edge. A standard Sicarius mission going something like this. “Sicarius, go kill Joe Blow.” Sicarius disappears. Sicarius reappears some time later and says “Mission completed.” End of story. No endless planning. No annoying brooding. No monologue-ing. Nope, just a skilled assassin doing his job. And in “Shadows of Innocence,” I was finally allowed a glimpse behind the stoic façade at how and why Sicarius acted as he did as well as what he truly felt.
Now, if this story sounds like something you might like to try, please realize it might be more entertaining if you have read book one of the series and are already familiar with the characters highlighted here, but if you decide to start here, never fear, because “Shadows” is an entertaining adventure tale in its own right, filled with wonderful interactions between Sicarius and other main characters as well as having a rousing assassination tale of its very own.
Another short story, but as much as I hate short stories, I did enjoy this one as it provides insight into the Emperors Edge Series which I have very much enjoyed and I would think you will also if your reading this (long for me) review.
