You ever watch an action adventure movie where things just keep coming at you -- car chases, explosions, daring escapes, near misses -- and you spend the whole moving on the edge of your seat, afraid to go to the restroom even though you badly need to pee (partly because the movie has your adrenaline pumping, partly because of that zillion-ounce soda you guzzled) because you don't want to miss anything? This book was like that, except I could put it down for potty breaks.

Set in and around Kansas in 1870, the story focuses on Cat O'Banyon, a legendary female bounty hunter who travels the west bringing outlaws to justice and seeking the villain who killed her husband. Cat learned most of what she knows about disguise from Alexi Romanov, an itinerant confidence man and playboy who was her lover in the dark days after her husband's murder. Alexi saved her sanity, but when she was strong enough, she left him because 1) he's a manwhore, and 2) she's a woman on a mission.

Cat's and Alexi's paths cross again when someone puts a bounty on Cat's head, and suddenly instead of hunting outlaws, Cat's on the run because every outlaw on the frontier is suddenly hunting her. This book is jam-packed with action--shoot-outs, narrow escapes, near-death experiences--and interspersed with flashbacks to the formative events that shaped both Cat's and Alexi's characters. (For Cat, this is her husband's murder, for Alexi, it is his time as a sniper in the Union Army and subsequent torment as a prisoner of war held in the Confederacy's most notorious prison.)

The romance element in this story is honestly a bit thin (I had a hard time believing Alexi reformed his manwhoring ways, or that Cat really cares that much if he does), but the plot is so exciting, who cares?

It was a good book, funny, romantic and a drama. I have ordered the next book in the series, hope it will be as good as first one.
I choose the 5 stars because I have read other books by this author.The thing Ilike about Lori is that she responds to her fans. I most definately will purchase any future books she writes.
This book was good, but all of the deception made it dificult to become too invested in the characters. It left me feeling a little flat, but the writing is good.
This was the first book I read by Lori Austin and I was hooked! I have since read several more but this is still my favorite. I loved the damaged heroine Cat and I was intrigued by the mysterious hero Alexi. Together they were a great team. I was happy to see them make appearances in the sequels but would love to see more of them. Thanks for a great stay Lori!

I tend to like historical romances and that historical values, not modern day values transported to 1865. I have a hard time buying the story when the values don't fit
This was the best book I have read in quite a while. It is a more realistic version of the civil war and wild, wild west than I have seen in a while. Also, while the heroine is somewhat independent, she does not appear to be a 21st century woman shoved into the wrong century. There is a lot of action, sympathetic lead characters and quite a story here. I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book and recommend it highly.
I read books 2 and 3 in this series before I read this one. I'm glad because this is my favorite. I loved both Cat and Alexi. Alexi intrigued me from his appearances in the other two books, but this is his and Cat's story, and he shines. He's my kind of hero--gifted with languages and disguises, charming, loyal (in his own way), intelligent, daring, and willing to risk everything for the one person who's his soul mate. Cat is a dynamite heroine--self-sufficient, determined, intelligent, and willing to risk everything--almost--to get revenge.

If Joan Wilder from the movie Romancing the Stone were a real person, I think she'd be proud to write this kind of gritty, realistic western romance. Lori Austin has reinvented the western historical romance with this series, and this book is not to be missed.
